One of the most magical aspects of living near the Puget Sound is the connection to its marine life, and in my opinion especially the orcas. Whether you’re a long-time local or a visitor, hearing the words “Orcas spotted near Alki!” can spark pure excitement. Thanks to the dedicated whale-watching community, including a lively WhatsApp group, spotting these majestic creatures feels like being part of a secret yet inclusive club. Today I was able to enjoy a workout in my sunroom that overlooks the sound and enjoy a Whale Watching adventure, how lucky!
The Puget Sound is vast and breathtaking, stretching from the southern waters of Olympia and Hoodsport to the bustling waterfronts of Edmonds and beyond. It’s this immense and dynamic space that provides a home for two unique groups of orcas: the residents and Transients. Resident pods like the J pod stick to our waters. While the transient pods are a bit more adventurous. This can be seen in how they eat, hunting seals and other marine mammals for the transients. while our local orcas dine on Salmon. These dietary differences highlight the Sound’s delicate ecosystem, a balance that we’re all responsible for preserving.
